Shed Size Guide
Choose a shed size based on what needs to fit, how you will use it and what may change later.
Use this as a guide
Use this guide to choose a shed size. Final dimensions, access, engineering and approval needs depend on your site and shed.
Start with what needs to fit
List vehicles, caravans, trailers, boats, tools, benches, shelving, garden equipment, farm equipment, machinery and storage that the shed may need to accommodate. Use the actual dimensions of your own items rather than relying on assumed sizes.
Storage or workspace?
Storing items is different from using them. Working in the shed needs room for doors, people, loading, benches and shelves.
Width, length and height
Width affects what can sit side by side and the room left to move around. Length affects where parking, equipment, work areas and storage fit. Height affects tall items and door openings. Measure the item and the room it needs.
Bays and measuring
A bay is a section along the length of a shed. Use bays to plan where vehicles, machines, storage and work areas will go.
- Vehicles and equipment: measure width, length and height, how it will enter, how doors open, how it will turn and the room needed to get in and out.
- Caravans and boats: measure the caravan or boat and trailer, its highest point, the door opening and the space needed to enter, turn and park.
- Workshops: list benches, tools and materials. Measure the room needed to work around them.
- Farm and machinery: include implements, loading or service areas, room to move and future equipment or storage.
Access and openings
Think about how the largest item will enter, how people will move and how roller doors, PA doors and windows affect the space.
Plan for future use
Think about another vehicle, more storage, a larger workshop or new equipment. Allow for these needs when you choose a size.
